This is a scene near the village of Baragulu in Alego Location, Siaya District. Poles (tal) arch upwards out of the grass with quill birds trapped in basket cages (sigol). Each basket contains one live quill bird. Some baskets are hung on a row on single long poles while others are single baskets hung on short poles around the long poles. This is the method of trapping quill birds for food. The live birds in the baskets are hung up on the poles and when they sing they attract many other wild quills to come around the poles where they are caught by cow-hair knots tied to fit and tighten around their necks. They are then removed, usually already dead, and taken home for food. [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004]
